I really like how this generation of Grand Prix looks. Rarely do I see one in good condition, but when I do I’m struck by how well thought-out the design is for something from the mid-90s.

Kinja'd!!!

And then there’s the pre-facelift one with the lower grille (literally they gave it a face lift)

My friend had a 2003 Grand Prix GTP that I recall being pretty awesome.

Those pillars seem so thin now.

Really wanted one for a first car in the ‘00s. They’re all over the Midwest, mostly rusted out, with an exhaust leak for that sweet 3800 Series II drone.

Also, that bumper wasn’t a facelift, it’s the SE trim vs. the GT/GTP trim from the same generation.

Face lift?

Maybe I’m scrambled up but that looks just like any other 1997-2003 SE.

I do have an obsession with 90s GM for some reason. I feel like the 90s was a high point where GM really figured out how to build a car, then everything went to hell in a handbasket around 2003 and everything between ‘03 and ‘12 was pretty damn good. I mean, compare the interior of a 2003 Seville with the interior of a 2007 STS. No contest, the STS is utter shite. Compare the interior of a 2000 LeSabre with an 07 LaCrosse. What was a very nice place to sit became an Impala with some more fake wood trim. Compare the interior of a ‘93 Chevy Lumina with a ‘07 Cobalt! The Lumina interior could take a beating, the switchgear was super nice and clunky and it had some of the most hilariously overstuffed seats ever and padded vinyl on EVERYTHING. Cobalt? Hard plastics, uncomfortable seats, rattly door cards, rubbish switchgear.

Here are some pictures.

Kinja'd!!!

Seville.

Kinja'd!!!

STS.More hard edges, the blandest gauge cluster ever with a majority of the buttons on the dash ripped from a goddamn TrailBlazer and HOLY MOTHER OF FAKE WOOD.

Kinja'd!!!

LeSabre.

Kinja'd!!!

LaCrosse. That center console is an abomination and dear god get all of that fake wood out of my face.

Kinja'd!!!

Chevy Lumina. One of the coolest dashboards of the 90s, and in a friggin economy car. Check out the padded cloth on the doors. Super comfy to lean your head against and watch the telephone poles go by. Also the noise the power locks make is immensely satisfying. Sounds like closing a bank vault.

Kinja'd!!!

Aaaand the cobalt. Plastic plastic plastic awful.

I keep forgetting that front end is a trim level and not a facelift. Damn it.

Huh. Only every 1 out of 20 or so I see have that front end. I assumed it was an older design. TIL.

The 90s were underrated for domestic cars. Modern enough to have lots of the features we expect in a brand new car, but old enough to be simple and easy to work on and have cheap parts. Low beltlines, great visibility, but you can still find 90s cars with stuff like heads-up displays, heated steering wheels, four million trip computers, etc.

I believe that was the lightest car offered with a 3800 Series II Supercharged. They’re silly fast. I drove a GTP 40th Anniversary Edition which sports progressive-rate springs, upgraded sway bars, a REALLY nice sounding dual exhaust, altered engine and transmission tuning, and lots of fun appearance and interior bits. It was a very not-bad car to drive. Also, purple. I’d love to get my hands on one some day.

No vertical door handles was a huge step back.

For the five seconds they worked, lol. We had a two door lumina get traded in that had a hole saw taken to the B pillars because the handles broke and they just lifted up on the rod in order to open the doors. The driver side had some chicken wire looped around it to make it easier.

My mom had one of the 4-door SEs. She hated the car, but I always loved it. She bought it new, kept it for I think 5 years and traded it on a new Lacrosse. She loves that car...I’m not quite as much a fan, though.

I had an '01 Grand Prix GT. It was the worst car I have ever owned. My sister bought it new. All maintenance and service was done by GM dealers. She gave me a stack of maintenance and service records two inches thick when I bought it from her. That damn pos ate wheel bearings like my dog eats Scooby snacks. It also went through 3 cats in four years. I was relieved when I was able to unload it on some poor schmuck and replace it with my Tahoe. But you are right, it did look great.

No joke, I wrote that reply differently at first.

First I was gonna say “Dude that’s an SE” until I saw it was you, and then I started second guessing my own memory.
